Several studies have shown that linoleic acid (LA) and ursolic acid (UA) extracted from yellowgreen vegetables reveal antitumor activities. In the present study we investigated the effect of LA and UA for the cytotoxic activity of mouse
peritoneal macrophage in order to elucidate the immunological mechanism of antitumor activity of these substances.
The peritoneal macrophage macrophage activity was significantly augmented by LA and low concentration of UA both invifro. The effect of LA appeared to be proportional to its concentration, however the effect of UA showed slightly an inhibitor effect at a high concentration (2.50¥ìg/ml, 5.00¥ìg/ml). Similar augmentations of peritoneal macrophage were obtained with culture supernatants of LAA or UA-exposed spleen cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Marked augmentations of macrophage activities by LA and UA suggest that these materials may act as a biological response modifier.
